The year was 1997...
For kicks, I flipped through my high school senior yearbook over the weekend, since I hadn't opened the thing in years. Supposedly, the Corning-Painted Post West High School Class of 1997 10 year reunion is scheduled to happen next year. That is, if someone motivated from my class will work with the alum association to actually put the event on. (Why are you looking at me? Just because I'm an event planner by profession doesn't mean I'm going to do this one too.) Senior year is a little overrated, I think. It wasn't my favorite year, although I do have some fond memories. I think it's mostly because a lot of my friends were a year or two ahead of me, so my sophomore and junior years rocked, and by the time I got to be a senior, the people that were left were my Woodland Park girls, my best guy friend, and my little brother's friends who I'd known forever too. But wow, how time flies. My senior biography says that my future profession would be Business Administrator. Did I really know at that time what that was? (Well, in way, I suppose it was right. At least my degree was that.) The nickname Eves has still stuck, although to this day I don't know how I got it in high school but know how I got it in college. I look at all the messages that were signed in my yearbook and I just have to chuckle. All the dreams and ambitions we had at 17, 18 - when I look back, it's quite cute, really. The memories are classic though. There was the band trip. We were proud Viking band geeks, crossing the border to go to Toronto. Those cute soccer and lacrosse boys, with no shirts on, spelling out GO TRIBE at the Blue Jays/Braves game. And we thought we were so fancy, getting all dressed up to see Phantom of the Opera. My flute section rocked. The girls tennis team was a real scream. The team sleepover, with the crazy idea to go TP and egg a guy's house in the rain. AP Calc - were we out of our mind trying to survive? I always had a locker next to the same twins every year... only to find out they posed for Playgirl about 7 years later! The spring musical - Barnum! I got to go to senior prom with a very cute blonde. :) The theme was Unforgettable, and it sure was because the best king and queen was crowned that night (huge upset)! Everyone asked me where Illinois is and why the "s" is silent at the end. The first WHS graduation in years to be held outside at the stadium. And what a glorious Thursday evening that was. I couldn't wait to get out. And so I did, and never looked back. Sure, it's always great going home, some of the gossip never changes, and while I'll always look back fondly on the little town of glass, I am truly a big city girl at heart.
(btw, Mrs. Ham House - did you know that you never signed my yearbook? It's only taken me 9 years to realize it.)
I don't know what to expect if the reunion happens next year. (Am I ambitious enough to take on this event? Hmm...) I still hear about a handful of people... most who stayed local and got married young and had kids (and possibly divorced by now), so maybe it wouldn't be as big of a surprise. There are certainly a couple of people I am curious about, since I haven't seen them since the day we graduated. Am I now where I thought I would be 9 years ago? Surprisingly, pretty much - I live in a big city, succeeding in my business career (although what I love doing now for my career was definitely a surprise), and in a loving relationship with someone who is truly my better half. Those are the things that I wanted to be doing, 10 years after graduation. When I was 17, I didn't think I'd get married until I was 30 - I was way too career-focused. So be careful what you set your sights on. :)

When you're done, you might want to reread that sentence a little closer for "dramatic effect" :)

Who thought the same thing until I remembered the story, and the two copies of the evidence that Eva brought home to prove it.
I remember that fateful call, Eva....The pride of Corning, NY....
SO sorry I didnt sign your yearbook, that was a big oversight!!! Here's an aproximation of what I may have written (I'm just so eloquent)
Dear Eva- You are so fun! Never Change! Remember those moments in the band office, or on the bus? Remember coach? Keep in touch at college.
Sarah B.
Hope you will forgive me for the post.
Got your package yesterday, Jack LOVES Percy and I LOVE the thank you cards, you have such a talent...I may be commissioning your work sometime soon....
Schaffer - only you would be able to pull off a comment like that. :)
Swany - remember my sophomore year roommate Reena? Well, she was Reens, and I was Eves. It's on the back of our WR4 shirts.
Steve - in my defense, Heidi's the one who got me the 2nd copy, and I did send it to off to Day for her to see.
Mrs. Ham House - well, of course I forgive you! So glad Jack loves Percy (I was so intimidated in the toy store!) and just let me know when you need to place an order! :)
ouch, color me doh...
